those "VGA boosters" are such a ripoff. i'd rather get a good quality PSU for ~$140 than put my trust in one of those things.

Manitoba, if you are going to buy a PSU, all that matters is the brand.

Coolermaster is the only respectable one out of that list you most recently posted. Sunbeam? LOL. Raidmax is you want a class A electrical fire.

If you are buying a PSU for a future build on the scale you are talking about, try 1000watt +.

For dual 8600GTs, you will need dual 12v rails at minimum. Splitting a single 12V would be bad. You need to make sure the Amperes per rail are at least 12-16 per 12v rail. That will ensure stability. It is all about ampere output and stability of voltage ratings. If your 3.3v goes down by even 10-20uVolts, you are screwed.

Ultra X3 800w.

EDIT: I just read Rahja's thread, and that's not entirely true! Antec, I trust them with everything, but I'd be damned if I'd use one of their power supplies, especially the ones with racing stripes on them (namely the 800w and 1000w variations).

1st of all check and see how much power you are actually using. Also if you are planning to upgrade your video card or add more drives, etc., then include that in factoring. Give yourself some headroom, but don't buy more than you need.

2nd Try to get a brand name or at least do research to find out if the company makes good stuff and if that particular unit is a decent power supply. Anandtech.com is a good site for general tech info. johnnyguru.com is a good site for power supply info.

3rd buy something on sale if possible. Frys, newegg, buy.com, etc. usually have a sale or 2 a month on a decent power supply. I looked and not many deals right now on power supplies, but these are the deal sites I use when I need something.

fatwallet.com
slickdeals.net

So this one would be great then for running dual 8600gts?

The Amps and that is what throws me around.
Or I could even do these

Mani, again. Stick with the brands I mentioned please, or in 3 months or less, we will most likely have you posting one of the following threads:

Graphics issue!
PC Won't Boot!
PC BLEW UP!
WTF IS GOING ON HAX?!

etc etc. Brand is extremely important in the PC world. There are good brands, there are decent budget brands, and then there are the rest. The ones you posted fit into "the rest" category.

i was more worried about the mobo and that being bad that getting a non brand PSU.

Got a939 mobo to fix my other one so now I can give my old beast to my nieces,
